Colorado Summit for Inclusive Teen Athletics and Activities

This first-ever Summit will welcome teens from across Colorado focused on making high school athletics and activities inclusive for all identities.

This event is built on YCD’s model of bringing together students and teachers from public and private, large and small, urban and rural schools to build community, spark dialogue, and initiate positive change in Colorado’s schools and communities. The Summit will focus exclusively on topics of interest to student athletes, coaches, and extracurricular program participants, and how to make these sports and programs more inclusive across the state.

COVID-19 Update: Due to COVID-19, the Summit is currently on hiatus until the situation has improved. This program will be rescheduled once the health situation makes that possible. In the meantime, we invite you to explore it in more detail below.

Tentative Schedule

We fill the day with numerous opportunities for students and coaches to discuss, engage and explore the topics that are most important to them. This is a draft schedule pending further work and decisions from the Student Executive Team. Click any portion of the day below for more information.

Arrival and Parking

If your group is not traveling to the event together, agree on a specific time to arrive as a group in advance.

Breakfast and Registration

We provide a light breakfast, including bagels and cream cheese, yogurt, fruit and muffins, as well as water and coffee.

Opening Ceremonies and Keynote Speech

Opening Ceremonies begin with welcome speeches by the conference student co-chairs and other leaders. The Student Executive Team works hard to identify and invite a notable public speaker to address conference attendees.

Discussion Groups and Lunch

The first interactive session of the conference day involves informal group discussions of students from all over the state led by trained student facilitators. Students have an opportunity to speak their mind about the social issues they are facing in their teams and sports, and hear from other students from across the state who may be facing similar or different issues. Lunch is served at this time as well. While students are in their discussion groups, coaches and adults meet to have professional development workshops.

Workshop A

Students and faculty advisors attend a workshop of their choice, chosen in advance. See a list of workshops offered here.

Workshop B

Both students and faculty advisors attend a second workshop of their choice, chosen in advance. See a list of workshops offered here.

Action Planning Meetings

All attendees meet back with their schools or organizations for a brainstorming discussion on creating an action project for the second semester. Each school is free to identify whatever issue is most pressing to be addressed, and YCD provides support and guidance as students plan, enact, and evaluate their project.

Closing Ceremonies

We finish the day by giving out a community award, viewing a video montage, and hearing from an exceptional musical performer.

Workshops and Topics

The workshops offered at the Summit will be chosen by the Student Executive Team, so that the topics are constantly reflecting the needs, interests, and challenges facing Colorado student athletes and activity participants.

As this is a new program with a focus on inclusion in sports, athletics and extracurricular activities, most workshops and presenters will be new to YCD, making it unlike any other conference we’ve held before.

Call for Workshop Proposals

The Student Executive Team planning this event welcomes proposals on any topic relating to diversity and inclusion in sports, athletics and extracurricular activities. In addition they have identified the following topics as priorities:

  • Social differences between club sports and high school sports
  • Stigmas and stereotypes on what it means to be an athlete, non-athlete or member of specific extracurricular activities
  • Stigmas on the division between varsity, JV and other “levels”
  • Hazing
  • Managing failure and mental wellness in student athletics and activities
  • Balancing between student and athlete identities
  • Skill versus interest in determining student extracurricular activities and sports
  • The influence of adults on student participation in sports and activities
  • The use of sports and activities to create community
  • Healthy competition, and building school spirit while keeping sports positive
  • Socioeconomic barriers and discrimination in teen athletics and activities
  • Gender discrimination in athletics
  • Homophobia in sports and why it still exists
  • LGBTQ+ voices in the athletic community
  • Religion’s role in student activities and sports

Propose a Workshop

Do you have an idea for a good workshop at this event?  We are currently accepting proposals and would love to hear from you! Past presenters have included high school students, non-profit organizations, teachers, parents, and interested members of the community.

As with all YCD conferences and events, the Summit is planned entirely by the Student Executive Team, a group of students from a wide variety of high schools and identities.

Donations and Sponsorship

The Student Executive Team is working hard to create this unique and new opportunity for teens across Colorado to make their sports and activities more inclusive for all identities, but could use your support. We need to raise a total of $15,000 for this vision to become a reality once the COVID-19 situation allows for in-person conferences to resume. Please consider a donation or sponsorship to support these teens’ efforts.
